Power of culture – At work and at home

The power of culture – do you know the impact of a good culture?

For those who know me, you will know I love nothing more than taking a break mid-year with the family to really switch off and take time to reflect. And on my yearly break away I always think about the power of culture.

This year we have embarked on a full family holiday, with myself, my Wife Jody, my two sons, 14-year-old Brad and 7-month-old Max. To make this an even bigger family getaway my wife has joined us up with 15 of her family members.

Anyway, the reason why this is important is that her sister has a two-year-old little boy, and what I saw in day one of the break and I reflected on, was the power of culture. It was unbelievable when I had that WOW moment, which most of us will and have walked past so many times.

As we embarked on the pool to have some fun it was fair to say the hotel in Bulgaria was very international, with people coming from Russia, France, Germany, and many other, great nations.

Children are diamonds

Children are diamonds when they are small, so pure and innocent, with no preconceived judgments about the world, people, race, religion, gender, or any other programmed beliefs.

I know this because my wife’s two-year-old nephew, jumped out of the pool and walked over to another little boy, who did not speak any English, and started to play football. The two boys played with each other for ages, neither understanding the other, but both knew how to smile and be friendly.

They respected each other as they passed the ball between them and did not have any idea they may be different in culture, religion, gender or morals and belief system. Children are so pure and perfect, it is the world, the environment, our parents, our nations and situations that programme us.

The power of culture when done right

Later in the afternoon I reflected on the two children playing and couldn’t help but think, if we all adjusted our belief system a little, and as people no matter what nation we come from, we offered a kinder and more respectful approach, maybe we would have a better place to live.

It also shows me how powerful culture can be as I am sure all people believe they are respectful, kind, and considerate, but what we have is different beliefs programmed and conditioned into us, as I said at the start of this blog.

I am proud to be British and have a British culture, morals and belief system. Even when we have so many challenges going on in our great nation, we must not forget our culture and how great we are as a nation and a nation of leaders, as leaders we must set the example for our future generations to follow.

Seeing arrogance, and rudeness in other people doesn’t make me adjust my value system or my morals. I will always do what I believe to be the right thing and act in a manner that does not go against my beliefs.

[us_single_image image=”8697″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center” animate=”afc” animate_delay=””]

If I change then I have been influenced, and I become a follower, not a leader. Even Ghandi had something to say on culture, and he clearly saw its need to be created and the importance of it, so we must be on the right path.

How can we influence future generations?

[us_single_image image=”8695″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center” animate=”afc” animate_delay=””]

I love the powerful infographic above from www.oasdom.com. It made me start to think about the culture in the workplace along with the importance and power of it. If you get it right, you can get people to adopt it, live it and breath it.

This will not just affect people at work, but can also have an impact on their out of work life if done right. This culture system could start to live and breathe in your team’s homes. If the culture and value system you build is right, then this is how you can influence a change in the world. As small as it may be, it’s a change. If we all made a change to one person, one business, one environment at a time then surely, we could bring about a better tomorrow.

When your culture and company values spread to others’ homes, this could then be passed on and part instilled in our children. Children then grow up with a much better and happier culture, and value system, which may make a difference to how they develop, and act with others. After all, remember from the start its us, as parents, that influence and programme our children.

I hope this blog has made you stop and think a little bit more about your response and your ability to make an impact. It is our responsibility as leaders in business, at home as parents, to set the right culture, and possess the right values. Culture does not make people, people make culture.

Good luck, I hope this has helped or made you think, and please feel free to follow me on twitter @DannyMIDSimpson and let me know your thoughts.

What can businesses learn from film?

Can Films Teach Us Ethics?

On Saturday night sat in front of the TV, my little man in his cot, my wife, and 13-year-old son sat beside me. Just your standard night in, watching some rubbish TV and then I saw a classic come up on the TV guide. A favourite of mine since I was a kid that I remember watching over, and over again. An iconic film that most know, even a lot of the younger millennial generation of today will recognise the famous scenes. Watching it again made me think, what can businesses learn from film? What was this film I hear you ask? A film that showed 2 men, compete. One using the latest tech and education, one using hard work, determination, and persistence and pure blooded passion…

[us_single_image image=”8667″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center” animate=”afc” animate_delay=””]

Rocky 4 can teach great life skills if watched right.

My son Brad turns 14 next week and he’d never watched Rocky 4 before. I said to him, watch this and I know you will love it, and you will learn so much.

So, what can businesses learn from film and what are the key takeaways I got from Rocky 4 that can be applied to your career and life in general?

Lesson 1 – Persistence & Resilience

You will see the main man Sylvester Stallone, Aka Rocky, take some serious knocks both in and out the ring but pure resilience and persistence get him through the challenge, that not many think he can do. Not even his wife! These are essential in life and business as there will always be times when people tell you can’t do something and want to hold you back.

Failing is something you will do a lot but keep going as success is around the corner. Don’t give up and don’t let people tell you can’t do something. If you want to do it then do it but you will need a lesson to support you.

Lesson 2 – Motivation & Focus

You will see how Rocky has complete focus on his goal to win and beat his opponents. This makes him get up do more and keep moving closer to the goal no matter what it takes.

This is so essential in business, you need to motivate yourself and you need absolute focus on your goals. Choose something that motivates you when you feel like giving up, or when people want to pull you down.

I use the rocky soundtrack, I have it saved in my playlist, I use pictures of my sons and wife, as I have them all the time on my desk and on my phone. You can also find some fantastic motivational videos on YouTube. Find yours and make sure you keep them prominent.

[us_single_image image=”8668″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center” animate=”afc” animate_delay=””]

Lesson 3 – Have Good People Around You

Rocky obviously succeeds in the film. He could only do this with great people around him. His trainer making sure he commits to training, his wife and Polly to keep him humble, grounded and focused, the Russian guards to keep him safe and make sure he can train with freedom.

In life and in business, you need people around you helping you, pushing you on, and keeping you going in the right direction. Clear your locker out from people that only want to either bring you down and hold you back or want to be around you because of your success.

I have always believed that you are an average of the 5 people you spend the most time with, so choose wisely!

In conclusion, what can businesses learn from film?

So there are my thoughts on this topic, films can be great to watch in terms of entertainment but can also teach you really important life skills. I think that the Rocky films are so motivating and uplifting and have taught me a lot.

I know that you will find them addictive, the story of rags to riches and the underdog, it shows you can achieve what you want, but you have to put all your effort in. I don’t think they make them like they used to!

Feel free to tell me the 3 lessons you’ve taken personally or what businesses learn from film on twitter @DannyMIDSimpson, I’d love to hear what your thoughts are.

Partnership To Success with Macclesfield Town

Macclesfield Town go up to the football league – #Champions

[us_single_image image=”8603″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center”]

Firstly, a huge well done to everyone at Macclesfield Town Football Club, with thanks to all the commercial family for their huge support throughout the season.

Almost 12 months ago we partnered with the Silkmen and became their official digital media partner, supporting their online presence with our fantastic digital team, by creating some great ideas and keeping it simple.

Empowering your people

After we signed the agreement, I passed this relationship over to a couple of our team members with Martyn Barrow our regional business development manager at the front of the team to lead this partnership to success, for both us and the club and help galvanise the commercial family.

Together Martyn and the the team have taken the relationship and partnership to a whole new level, we now see the club as an extension of our business and team.

[us_single_image image=”8600″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center”]

Giving people a goal, with some guidance mixed with opportunity is a great way to get success. This is a great demonstration of that.

Some people asked me, why leave it to them? They are not experts. I believe we can build even higher next season as we have laid some very solid foundations. What we have done in the first year has given me confidence to answer those sceptical people. I wanted them to have no walls and no boundaries with ideas, no idea of what works and what doesn’t, after all success comes from failing but having the passion and persistence to try again and keep learning. This is what the team and Martyn have done, and I can say they have made a great success of it and had a lot of fun along the way.

[us_image_slider ids=”8610,8609,8614,8615,8611,8612″ nav=”thumbs” fullscreen=”1″ img_size=”tnail-masonry”]

Empowering people and letting them feel comfortable and confident to fail is a must for me. I didn’t do this partnership all for ROI even though we did get the ROI after 6 months. I wanted to see what can be achieved by enabling some committed, trusted, passionate people to write some goals down from a crazy bunch of ideas. Then empowering and directing the team, and finally adding lots of fun.

The results speak for themselves. We have helped get an average video viewing of between 5-8 thousand per video, engage the local stores and supporters, had over 1 million interactions across our joint social platforms, won lots of new commercial and corporate business, made strong relationships, brought people together, created a reciprocal place for business support, advice and help, and the results carry on…

The club also learned that collaboration of your commercial partners and creating a tighter family of commercial relationships & group will drive the business’ & club’s success. I think more teams should adapt a relationship approach and move away from narrow minded transaction type mentality.

Building relationships, not sales – our approach with Macclesfield Town

[us_single_image image=”8602″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center”]

Seeing us build strong relationships with people and businesses such as with Jon from Big Brand Ideas, Nick Bianchi from Arighi Bianchi, Macclesfield Town front of shirt sponsor, and so many others shows the power of team work and group passion.

Next time you’re thinking about doing a sponsorship or partnership, think about what is it you really want to achieve. How can you help the club or business? How can you help other businesses already associated move forward?

Doing business like this, builds strong relationships, gets great engagement for your business and people and adds value to your brand and others associated. I’m proud of my team for how they’ve handled this relationship and want to strive for this approach going forward!

Well Done – How Do You Say It?

The MID Awards 2018, giving a deserved well done!

On the 17th February we said well done to all our MID Commers on our biggest stage possible at our annual awards, The MID Awards 2018!

This year was amazing as we hosted our awards at the Midland hotel in Manchester, and a night that was hosted by our newest board member and HR Director, Jennifer Hulme.

[us_single_image image=”8255″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center”]

It was an incredible evening full of energy, passion and recognition, and our teams loved it, as they always do, especially the more competitive ones.

We also use this as a platform to recognise all the amazing people in our business and all the amazing highlights of the previous year. It’s a great opportunity to pull our entire operations together and say well done and thank you for everything you do!

[us_single_image image=”8256″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center”]

It was an opportunity to have some wonderful food, have a drink and a laugh with our big community which is crucial to promote togetherness in the business.

This was our 7th awards and every year we have got bigger and better, and I know this plays a part in our success, growth and also performance.

I remember when our first one was done in the premier inn with just certificates, and you know what, I am glad we started somewhere. So often people are put off as they can’t get to the desired goal straight away…

[us_single_image image=”8259″ size=”tnail-masonry” align=”center”]

This is why you have to dream big and start small. A start is already a step in front of many others that are still procrastinating.

So, make 2018 your year, make a start and say well done to your team on your own big stage, where and what ever that may look like…….

After all, without people you don’t have a business…

Please share with me your stage and shout about it!

Surround yourself with good people – talent spotting

Spotting talent to help grow your business.

So, this week we officially announced that Jennifer Hulme is our first non-executive board member, as we start to scale the business even further and build the MID Group.

Having great people in your business is essential, as you will very much already know, and good people are sometimes hard to come across. Making sure they fit in with your people, your culture and also that you can work with them is essential.

I am lucky to have three great senior leaders, all in very different journeys. For one of them in particular, their journey has taken them to become our first non-executive director.

Two out of three leaders have developed through our business both starting from a manager to becoming a major part and a real influence on how our business runs at a senior level. So, developing people is vital but it starts with spotting the talent, to begin with.

I always work on a 7/10 rule. Meaning, if I make 10 decisions, 7 will likely be right and 3 will likely be wrong but I can reflect and learn from them. This helps me manage my emotions of making a bad decision. Rather than beating myself up about them, I manage my own expectations on whether I will make a mistake or make a wrong decision.

So, as Jennifer shares some great and exciting news this week, let’s look at Jennifer as a great example that may help you and your business.

Jennifer joined our business in September 2015, and I remember seeing lots of great HR candidates, at least 12 – 14.

I remember we did the first round of finals and no one really showed they had the MID factor, it was only on the two trench finalist’s that we saw Jennifer.

Jenn stood out head and shoulders above the rest, for a multiple reasons, some of which I have spoke below about to help.

I am going to let you know what I did to help myself discover if and how Jenn had the MID factor.

  • Jennifer had a keen desire and passion to succeed, she demonstrated a lot of sacrifices to get success in both her work and personal life. This showed that she wanted to win, she was really focused when she knew what she wanted. She was hungry for the opportunity and took plenty of risks in the interview, she didn’t give textbook responses. Instead, she presented with passion and energy.
  • Jenn showcased a wealth of experience but it seemed she had not been offered a place at the table to express herself and her capabilities. By asking the right questions we were able to discover that she has great ideas, and plenty of them, but the corporate machines had chosen to overlook them, as some do with arrogance and the ‘business-knows-best’ mentality. This was clear as most businesses will experience similar challenges.
  • After asking some further questions she had experienced a lack of authentic leadership, coaching and development. She invested in herself, with things like the CIPD and a passion to move through it and become a external influencer, and had not been supported in doing this. It appeared she didn’t really have any regular dedicated coaching sessions that were developing and leading her rather than managing her – so many business don’t coach development, instead, they manage the performance.

Even though performance is important, developing the person is equally important, as this is how the person improves and performance improves on its own. The person will become better equipped to perform and, therefore, they become far more capable.

Are you managing more than leading or have you got a good enough balance, I try and find a good balance with my senior team. If you are not prepared to invest in yourself and those around you, don’t expect others or your business to.

Believe in you and invest in you, after all, your brain is your best tool in life, why not invest in making it better and more effective!

Lessons in a summary.

As you can see there are some really amazing things you can pick up on by asking the right questions. Try today by asking a couple of different questions to see if you get different answers that may allow you discover and uncover some new talent in your people, friends and who knows maybe even your family and children.

In summary, make sure that if people say they want success and they really want to be successful, ask yourself how bad do they want it? How do they show it? What have they sacrificed to get it or are they expecting success to just happen?

Give people opportunity.

Sometimes I feel like I am not a CEO, I feel like I am a COE, a Chief Opportunity Engineer. If you give people the parameters to work in, empower them and guide them, they will almost always flourish.

Investing in you and your people.

How often are you, the candidate or the team member in question? Are you self-developing or going to free seminars to expand your knowledge and skills and build relationships.

Understand leadership truly and spiritually. How to lead more than manage, the job is more enjoyable when you lead and connect with people emotionally.

Ask yourself or event look at what people bring to your table. If Jesus brought wine and bread then everyone must bring something, look for it and ask people what are you contributing to the business. Do they know how they can contribute? Do they understand the impact of them contributing?

Seek questions that make you think – can you see the woods for the trees?

Read more about Jenns’s latest journey in the latest Press Release, here.

Alternatively, you can view the full news clipping by clicking here.

I hope this article can help you and offer you some food for thought when seeking or scouting for talent.

Watch out for my VLOGs coming soon, as we asked our digital media apprentice to start doing some interviews about key topics with certain leaders, especially the interviews with each of my senior teams.

Our first Board Member and HR Director, Jennifer Hulme, will soon feature in our upcoming videos which could include showcasing her experience, offering some great business insights and most of all, providing some really key information for local businesses.

Until next time… keep being awesome!
