Pride, Passion & Persistence – Are you nurturing your talent?

Pride, Passion & Persistence creates Talent

Over the last couple of months, I have been planning how we explore the talent in our business and who is ready for the next steps in their career, to become ready to help MID Communications move and grow to the next level.

After a great meeting with my leadership team, we decided that some of the current Senior leaders could play both a bigger and different role in our business. We started with a replacement of John Harvey, who is currently regional sales manager.
John applied to move to take ownership of the Operations channel, which is a very exciting opportunity that I could not say no to. This move created a new opportunity for an Area Sales Manager role.

We advertised the role, and in the applications came! This was amazing to see the confidence of our current store leaders.

We interviewed 3 amazing leaders, and what I can say from this experience is how amazing they all were. I know all 3 MID Comm’ers very well as they have all worked for the business for at least 3 years, moving into bigger stores and doing a great job in every store they have been involved in.

They have always shown great leadership skills, driving our key store leader’s, People Profit, and Proposition.

The interviews blew us away!

Each candidate was amazing. They were very creative, inspirational, well thought out, and had captured amazing new ideas, that encapsulated our core values, our culture, our direction, and our attitude.

We were expecting great but what we got was pure excellence. They were so good that we agreed to make 2 role’s for 2 of them, Jamie Houghton and Daniel Toft.

The 3rd candidate Lee Todman, I have agreed to put together a development plan, and some separate mentor sessions with myself over the next 12 months, that will help us both and the business.

I was so proud of them, to see how they have grown and developed within our business. It’s so exciting to think of the new opportunities, for our business over the next few months and for our 4 new rolled team members.

They have all been supporting and mentoring other managers and leaders over the past couple of months, this has really helped them realize how great they are, how much they actually know and how much they have grown/learnt.

My Lessons & Takeaways

  1. How often do you temperature check your leaders in an interview format to really see how much they have grown?
  2. How often do you get managers/leaders coaching other managers and leaders at the same level? Get them doing SWOTs on each other and creating action plans for each other – collaboration is amazing when done right!
  3. Not all promotions have to be upwards in your business people can move sideways, and add more value in another part of your business.
  4. Keep your business fresh and exciting to keep people engaged. My personal view that I learned a long time ago is, people in a role for 3-5 years can become frustrated, maybe even bored, uninspired, unmotivated, and some could even get complacent. I have adapted this theory over the last 18 months due to our amazing millennial generation, to 2-3 years.
  5. Finally, always be looking at your business and ask have you got the right people, in the right roles, reaching their full potential. If not make sure you address this FAST, as this can have a damaging effect on your business. As a leader, it is vital you always ask and challenge your team on this, at any level. This has really helped me make some tougher decisions over the last 12 months as we have freshened our business up.

A great week and I cannot wait to see the team this Sunday as we celebrate as a business community at our Summer Ball, at hotel Football.

I hope this helps you and adds some value for you or your business.

MID Communications CEO, Danny Simpson, feeling good about the new Stakehill Head Office

MID Communications CEO, Danny Simpson, feeling good about the new Head Office.

We made a brilliant leap forward with our new Home and Head Office, Link House.

We are nearly ready to move into our new head office, Link House, on Stakehill Industrial Estate.  This week in preparation for our completion of the top floor, we held a business event for the local businesses on Stakehill.

We invited all the local businesses from the estate, along with Rochdale council, and Rochdale development agency.

We had some amazing support from Carol Hopkins and her team, so huge thanks to them for their support.

The event was led by Emma Robinson who is a project officer for the Rochdale Development Agency.  It was a great breakfast event which had a solid turn out for its first time.

We had a fantastic range of speakers which included Manchester Transport to the towns CCTV management and Northwest Highways, all speaking about the positive changes proposed for Stakehill.

We also spoke about the exciting upcoming Rochdale Business Awards, which are now open for nominations, especially the retailer of the year category.

This is our award category we have constructed this year for Rochdale’s independent retailers to shout about how amazing they really are.

Please look at the categories here and get your application in, a great opportunity for any business to showcase your business and your amazing people.

It was great to host this in our newly constructed Training room when we complete we will be offering out to local businesses on the estate to use for free.  This is a great meeting or training facility, to help support local businesses.

Official Opening Coming Soon.

I am excited to host our official opening of the building sometime in August, as we attempt to bring a host of the Boroughs networking groups together to meet each other to make more new connections.

A few to mention who have shown their support early for the event already are, Rochdale football club business club, Oldham Business 100, Rochdale Development Agency, Rochdale Council, The Rochdale Ambassadors, with social media partners #rochdalehour.

I am proud to confirm Newly Elected MP Tony Lloyd attendance, along with the New Mayor of Rochdale.

It is so exciting, and fantastic to have such great support locally, this shows again that Rochdale’s public and private sectors along with local politician are all supporting new growth and businesses in Rochdale.

This is great to see, the town really does start to come alive with a whole host of positive events to come.

Danny Simpson – Business Boxing Pride, Passion, Persistence

Stop Competing Start Winning – Pride, Passion, Persistence

For those of you that know me you will know I am passionate about my 3 P’s – Pride, Passion and Persistence.  I love to tell and show people how these words, with there behavioural meanings and disciplines are vital to ensure success in life but more specifically in business.

Boxing is another passion of mine and also a great illustration of my 3 P’s;  as a result I would like to show you how you can apply Pride, Passion and Persistence into your everyday Business and Personal life, and be successful.

I am a HUGE Anthony Joshua Fan, he is an amazing sports personality and in my opinion could be as great a personality as Mohamed Ali. Every so often a rare talent enters their field and achieves great accolades and showcases their profession unbelievably well.  I think of people like Tiger Woods in Golf, Lewis Hamilton in F1, Cristiano Ronaldo in Football, etc.

I believe Joshua is going to be that legend for boxing.  Joshua is humble, grounded and has immense pride for boxing, as made him who he is today; passion with a love for winning and persistent, showing a real climb to success through good times and bad.

We watched our new Boxing Champion Anthony Joshua, defeat Klitschko in front of a sold out 90,000 Wembley crowd, and a box office record of television fans.  I believe he showcased the 3 P’s beautifully, as he always does.

Anthony Joshua showed exceptional mental strength, plenty of heart and resilience in the ring that Saturday night

Joshua started as he always does confident yet reserved as he settled into his surroundings, and the fight.  Joshua knocked Klitschko down in the 5th round and we all we thought he might have done it here, but the mighty Klitschko rose to his feet, to fight on.  Klitschko then took Joshua down in the 6th round.  Most of all I believe until this point, Joshua stuck to his plan, and looked confident.  While just like some businesses, Joshua got knocked down, and found himself in potential trouble.

Joshua got up and started to go through a process I believe every champion goes through at some point when competing. He did NOT, and was NOT going to lose right there in front of his 90,000 fans, his team and his watchers.  Pride, Passion and persistence got him off the canvas.

Passion for the sport, his past and his desire to win made him continue on through the remaining rounds.  He figured out what he needed to do to win the fight, whilst venturing into uncharted boxing territory.

Persistence and self belief allowed Joshua keep taking the punches and start to think smart about what his new strategy should be. In Anthony’s mind it was never in doubt that he would win; I believe he would have continued to get up time and time again. Through some tough criticism from the commentary with some people doubting if he could hold on and come back he persevered.

A strong mind, a strong team and the 3 P’s embedded in his way of working I believe was the reason Joshua went onto win, and become a bigger champion.

Consequently don’t allow worry in life or business to creep in when you get knocked down, or knocked back.  We must pick ourselves up, and keep going, reflecting on what happened.  As a result making sure you have the best people around you, with people who support you is also a huge part of winning.  Therefore remove negative vibes, and people from your life, choose winning attitudes and positive mindset, and don’t settle for anything else if you want to win.

Seems like you will always get people who have an opinion, and sometimes doubters, but channel this energy and apply it as focus to your goals, and you WILL SUCCEED…
